muesli bars

These are the yummiest muesli bars I've found so far. They certainly don't last very long.  Soon I will be experimenting with the recipe to remove the nuts so they're suitable for kindy - nut free policy.  They are based on Nigella Lawsons Breakfast Bars.


Muesli Bars

1 can (390-400gm)sweetened condensed milk 
250gm rolled oats
75gm shredded coconut
100gm dried fruit
125gm nuts
125gm seeds (eg sunflower, sesame, pumpkin)


Warm milk (I use a large bowl in the microwave), add remaining ingredients, mix well and press into a lined and greased tin (mine is 20cm x 31cm).  Bake for one hour at 130C, cool for 15 minutes in tin and then cut into bars.

Next time I think I'll increase the dried fruit, add some more seeds and maybe a few choc bits to make up for removing the nuts.  Any other ideas let me know!!

on my mind ....

I'm endeavouring to become a regular with Friday's 'on my mind' with Rhonda at Down to Earth.

 

On my mind today is my mother-in-law.  She came for dinner last weekend and brought these flowers - she's a florist and had come from her shop.  As I walked past them this morning, I thought of her and that it is Friday.  She hates Fridays, last year my father-in-law passed away from motor neurone disease, on a Friday.  For us we remember the date and how many months it has been.  For her, she remembers that its Friday, another week gone by without him.

cubby house ... all instalments, all at once

I mentioned previously, we've been building a cubby house for Master four's birthday.  I was going to wait until it was finished to post about it, but ever supportive hubby has been asking ... 'have you put it on your blog yet?', so here tis! 

This is the look of concentration, tongue has to be out!  Reminds me of a saying my dad used to use when building things went wrong - "you couldn't have had your tongue out the right way" !

 

 

I am very pleased to say we have spent about $32 on this, that was for nails.  Some of the material was left over from our house, other was wastage through hubby's work, and our neighbours gave us some that he had collected from work.  Not bad hey?

Hopefully, can show you the finished product in a week or so!

my babies have grown up

It's finally here ..... the first egg from our baby chickens, well I guess they're not babies anymore.  Bang on twenty weeks.  Its been a long wait.  Master four insists on an egg hunt every day in his quest for them to lay.  I'm telling you, on a property, that can be an exhaustive process because we have to look in every possible spot.  

We borrowed next doors rooster, a silver-laced wyandotte, as ours had became fox food last year.  

We had hy-line and gold-laced wyandotte hens, so now have a mixture.  Five roosters and six hens hatched.  Two roosters have gone by the wayside, one more to go while we'll keep two.  I like one, hubby likes the other so we'll keep two if they get along ok.  Two of the hens have died mysteriously.  Even consulting all my books and the university of google, I am perplexed as to what is going on.  Fingers crossed we lose no more.  Hubby emphatically draws the line at taking a chicken to the vet (he's definitely not as chook orientated as I am).  He'll put up with me bringing them inside to nurse but that's it!

Looking forward to collecting many more, my daughter is always asking for eggs to sell at her work!

and it came .....

Today sort of follows on from yesterdays 'on my mind'.  I was so looking forward to a cool change.  Master 4 came into our bed sometime during the night and my oh my, was he on a mission.  There was no snoring, no tossing and turning, he went upside down and all around.  After removing his foot from my throat, face and wherever he could reach several times in the wee hours, I gave up on the whole idea of a Saturday sleep-in. 

The early morning is actually my favourite time of the day, but I was so tired.  For me, nothing starts the day like a nice hot cup of tea.  With this in hand, I tip-toed around to make sure these minutes would be mine and mine alone!   After opening the house up to the cool breeze, I wandered out to the verandah.  One of my most treasured possessions beckoned .... my hammock.  How could I possibly resist? I lay there, gently swaying, with eyes closed.  I listened.  Crows, magpies, wild finches and various other little birds gently calling.  My two roosters crowing like there was no tomorrow.  The sun was just rising, the tops of the trees glowing, while the world woke.  What a glorious day it would be.

 a change in the weather

As of 9am this morning Perth has reached a record number of 26 consecutive days over 30C, with 10 over 35C and 17 nights over 20C.  The hottest summer since records began.  Tomorrow we are forecast 29C, a welcome relief from the heat for everyone.  It has taken its toll!!

washing day

Its one of those days when you just know you have to do the washing.  I've been putting it off because I have no washing liquid left.  Quite some time ago I became an avid follower of Rhonda Jean at down-to-earth.  I have learnt so much from this wonderful lady.  One of those being home-made laundry detergent, so I set myself to the task.  You can find the recipe to this here.


This will give me ten litres of washing detergent.
 

While you're over there, have a good look around - if you haven't done so before.  There is a fountain of knowledge that just flows and flows!

The upside of washing these days is that the nights are still so warm that I can hang it on the line at seven at night and its dry at seven in the morning!
